Explanation

This verse lists four marks of the fool. The first is 'naanaamai', shamelessness before an evil deed. Shame is a protection that keeps a man within the bounds of dharma; one who lacks it will not hesitate before any evil. The second is 'naadaamai', not enquiring into good and bad, the habit of acting without thinking. The third is 'naarinmai', lack of love, the state of having no compassion or affection for others. The fourth is 'penaamai', not cherishing and guarding anything good.

These four failings are linked. Without shame there is no need felt to enquire; without enquiry even a mistake brings no remorse; without love another's pain is not felt; and without cherishing, even the good things that came are lost. So the four should be taken as a chain.

Commentators split 'naarinmai' as 'naar inmai', lack of the fibre, meaning the lack of the love that binds a relationship as fibre binds a garland. 'Penaamai' is said to include not guarding one's body, family, name and wealth.

In today's life, when these four are in someone, the harm falls not only on him but on all who depend on him. So we should first test these marks on ourselves. Do I feel shame at wrongdoing? Do I act after reflection? Do I show love? Do I protect the good things that I have? If we can answer yes, we are far from folly.

Shame in the Tamil tradition is not a virtue of women alone; Valluvar says in the chapter on modesty (Naanudaimai) that it is a moral quality for both men and women.

A story

The Young Man at the Festival

In a small town the Panguni festival was held every year at the Amman temple. In that town lived a young man named Manikkam, who felt shame at nothing. On festival day he would push ahead in the line for the priest's prasadam and elbow aside the elderly. If anyone pointed it out, he would laugh and walk off.

Once the elders were discussing the festival expenses in the temple hall. Manikkam barged in and shouted, without any enquiry, 'There is no need for so much expense; cancel everything.' He did not think of the flower sellers, drummers and pandal builders who lived by that festival.

Even when his mother was ill he spoke no affectionate word to her; the old house and land she left him he lost in gambling. Because he cherished nothing, within a few years nothing remained with him.

At the next festival he stood at the edge. No one in the town invited him. Then an old teacher came to him and said, 'Son, you have lived out what Valluvar said: shamelessness, not enquiring, lack of love, not cherishing, these are the doings of a fool.' For the first time Manikkam felt ashamed.

That shame was his turning point. From that day he began to join in the town's work. His life showed that feeling shame is the first step to reform.
