Explanation

This is one of the sharpest verses in the chapter. A man has studied the texts, understood their meaning, and taught others. Yet if he alone does not restrain himself, there is no greater fool than he. 'Odhi' is study, 'unarndhum' is understanding the meaning, 'pirarkkuraiththum' is teaching. Despite all three, the fault is 'thaan adangaa', not being self-controlled. Control here means control of the senses, of anger, of the tongue, that is, self-restraint.

Folly here arises not from lack of knowledge but from the gap between knowledge and conduct. The man who knows what evil is, knows how to avoid it, advises others, and yet does not do so himself, destroys the dignity of learning. His words become mere sound.

Commentators explain 'thaan adangaa' as not controlling one's senses, or as not following the dharma he himself preached. Both point to the same thing: a contradiction between word and deed. Such a man deceives not only others but himself.

The verse is very apt for teachers, leaders and parents. Those who teach others must make their own life the first lesson. Children learn more from what we do than from what we say.

We must not think that Valluvar despises learning. The emphasis is meant to insist that the full fruit of learning is good conduct.

A story

Ravana's Learning

The Uttara Kanda of the Ramayana and Kamban's epic show Ravana as an accomplished scholar of the Vedas, the shastras and music. He was a devotee of Lord Shiva and skilled at playing the veena. Some explain his ten heads as the knowledge that spread in ten directions. He also knew well the ways of ruling.

But he did not restrain his senses. He knew that desiring another man's wife was wrong. One proof that this knowledge was within him is his fear of the curse that forbade him to touch unwilling women. Yet he carried Sita off by deceit and brought her to Lanka.

Vibhishana, Mandodari, Maricha and Kumbhakarna all gave him counsel. He refused every word. Kamban sings in praise of Ravana's knowledge and power, but the end of the story is that he was destroyed because he did not control his mind.

On the battlefield Rama brought Ravana down. Some traditions say that afterwards Rama sent his brother Lakshmana to him, saying, 'Ravana is a great scholar of statecraft; go and learn the art of ruling from him.' With so much knowledge, he fell through lack of restraint. This is the truth the verse shows.

Through Ravana, the relation between knowledge and restraint becomes very clear. Even the greatest learning needs the companionship of humility to remain safe for its owner and for others.
