Meaning

Never do what the faultless great dislike, telling yourself 'they will forgive'. O lord of the fine land of lovely hills and roaring falls, once they have turned against you, no one can easily turn them back.

Explanation

Testing the patience of the great is dangerous. They are slow to anger, but once angered, it does not pass.

The stories of sages like Durvasa and Parashurama bear this out.

The Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva

Nahusha and the Palanquin

From the Mahabharata. When Indra went into hiding, the gods made the righteous king Nahusha ruler of heaven. Power went to his head. He demanded Indra's wife Shachi, and to reach her house in style he yoked the great rishis to his palanquin and made them carry him.

Impatient with their pace, he kicked the sage Agastya on the head, crying "Sarpa, sarpa!" ("Move, move!"). Agastya said, "Then be a sarpa, a serpent." Nahusha fell from heaven at once and lay as a python in the forest for ages, until Yudhishthira answered his questions and freed him. A man may rise to the throne of heaven and still fall by offending the great.

To reflect on

Do not test the patience of the great.
