Oruneerp piranthorungku neentak kataiththum / Virineerk kuvalaiyai aampalok kallaa / Peruneeraar kaenmai kolinuneer allaar / Karumangkal vaeru patum.

Meaning

Though the lily and the ambal are born of one water and grow up together, the one can never become the other; so, though one may take up the friendship of the great, the works of those who are not of one's own water remain apart.

Explanation

The verse sets out a picture from nature. The lily and the ambal are born of the same pond water; they grow on the same bed, feeding on the same water. Yet the lily will never become the ambal. The first lesson of the image is that closeness does not change nature.

Now it comes to people. One may take up the friendship of the great, live beside them, grow up along with them; still, the deeds of those who are not of that water remain apart. Familiarity does not alter the quality of what a man does; it is his nature that decides how deep the deed goes. So in friendship, mingling is one thing and likeness is another.

To reflect on

Growing in one water does not change a nature; acquaintance is not likeness.
