Vazhakkenaiththu millaatha vaalvaayk kitanthum / Izhukkinaith thaamperuva raayin - izhukkenaiththum / Seykuraap paani sirithae as sinmozhiyaar / Kaiyuraap paani perithu.

Meaning

Though one lie on the edge of a sword as if he had no case to plead at all, if the blame comes to him of itself the share of his own fault is small; but the share of the gentle-spoken one he fails to win is great.

Explanation

The verse is built like a balance with two shares on it: the wrong a man does himself, and the gentle-spoken one he fails to win. The first share is small, says the poem; the second is great.

First it paints the hardest condition it can: to lie on a sword's edge as though one had no case to plead at all. Even at that extreme, if the blame falls to him and he takes it, the fault is a small share. But a greater loss stands beside it — to let the soft-spoken companion slip away. The balance of the poem says plainly that sharper suffering is lighter than losing a gentle bond.

To reflect on

Losing a gentle bond is a greater loss than the sharpest suffering.
