Meaning
You stood as the vast space of the sky, beyond telling and beyond knowing. You set ten million universes in the sky and put countless speeds in them. As many atoms as there would be if a world were divided atom by atom - that many yojanas of distance you set between them. Beauty! I will praise you as Kali.
The people of a land know the king who guards it as their king; the child dancing in its anklets knows the father who does it good as 'my father'. But can poor I point to your form, which drives and guards ten million universes? Grant me the grace to seek out and praise the goodness of yours I see on this small earth.
You dwell in the thing called the sun; you blaze as its spreading hot rays; you move as masses of black cloud; you come as darting lightning and kill living things; as pouring rain you sustain many lives; as the surrounding flood you transform lives; you fill all as the wide, long ocean. Victory to Kali! Victory to my Mother!
Becoming wind, you measured space; you became the life-breath of all living; becoming fire, you give light; you make what has died into seed-matter again; becoming a thousand rushing powers, you do the work of the world; you kill the lives that fall; you guard those that stand and give them many comforts.
Under the earth you became many metals; under the water you placed countless treasures; on the land you became mountains and rivers, thick forests and springs; gathering countless kinds of plants and crops, you enjoyed many goods; giving senses, you made living beings here, Mother! Praise! Praise! Praise to your grace!
You made the ocean of the mind, and in it you multiplied as the fruits of the karma we have done. With waves and whirlpools, battering winds and undercurrents, a region of pure silence, a part wrapped in white frost and scalding hot water - just like the ocean of water, you are present in many ways in the ocean called the heart.

Explanation
This is the song in Deiva Padalgal most full of a scientist's vision. In the first stanza Bharathiyar sings astronomy: ten million universes, their speeds, the vast distances between them. Measuring those distances as 'as many yojanas as there are atoms in a world' is an astonishing act of imagination.
The second stanza asks a question. The people know their king and the child knows its father, but how can I know you, who drive ten million universes? The answer: by praising the goodness of yours that one can see on this small earth.
The following stanzas see the Goddess in the five elements: sun, cloud, lightning, rain, flood, ocean, wind, fire and earth. She protects and she destroys. The last stanza is wonderful: like the outer ocean, the heart too is an ocean, with waves and whirlpools and a silent depth, and she is there as well.
To reflect on
In the 'ocean of your heart' today, are there more waves or more stillness?
