Meaning

He came: the One without beginning or end, who belongs wholly to those who have wholly given up kin, parents and every attachment, and is not theirs who are otherwise. He gathered the scattered spread of my monkey mind, cruel as I was, stilled it and held it. He cut away the delusion that is both darkness and emptiness. In that state where He stood as one, with no coming in and no going out, He was not one with me, not two, and not neither. Without lessening His own greatness, He entered into all that is mine; He gave Himself to me, and gave me to myself as well; in His great ocean of bliss He gave me joy that never cloys. He showed me the generosity that stands within and without without a break, and granted me His flowering feet. He is my King and my Lord, guardian of Vennainallur on the flowing Pennai, Meykanda Devan, the Great One whose temple is grace. He who destroys the malam and all that clings to souls is the one eye of every soul in the world.

Explanation

The closing poem of the book. All doubts are resolved, and the disciple sings of what he has received. 'Not one, not two, and not neither' is the shortest statement of Shaiva Siddhanta advaita: the soul does not dissolve into Shiva and vanish (that would be the doctrine of a single self); it does not stand separate from Him (that would be dualism); nor is it the emptiness of 'neither'. Advaita is the 'not-twoness' of body and life, of eye and light. The andhadhi that began with 'kan' in the first verse ends here with 'oru kanne', 'the one eye', and so joins back to the first verse.

To reflect on

If we see the Lord as 'the one eye of every soul in the world', how will we look at every living being around us?
