Meaning

As I was drowning, caught at the crest of dharma and adharma, the two kinds of karma, the Lord whose throat holds the poison of the great dark ocean came to Thiruvennainallur as Swetavana Perumal (Meykandar), took a human form, stood close, and lifted me up.

Explanation

Good karma and bad karma alike are causes of birth; a chain of gold and a chain of iron are both chains. The soul drowning in that sea of karma was brought to shore by the same Shiva who drank the halahala poison to save the world, now come as guru. Meykandar's birth name was Swetavana Perumal: he was born by the grace of the Lord of Thiruvenkadu (Swetaranyam) and was named after Him. Later the sage Paranjothi Munivar initiated him and named him Meykandar. This verse speaks as lived experience the teaching of the eighth sutra of the Sivagnana Bodham, that the Lord comes as guru in human form.

Thiruvadhavurar Puranam; the life of Manikkavasagar

The Guru under the Kurundha Tree

Manikkavasagar was a minister of the Pandya king. Once, as he travelled toward the eastern coast with great wealth to buy horses, he saw at Thiruperunthurai a guru seated under a kurundha tree, surrounded by disciples. As soon as he saw the guru's face, his heart melted, and he fell at his feet.

That guru was none other than Lord Shiva come in human form. He initiated Manikkavasagar, placed His holy feet on his head and took him as His own. The minister gave all the wealth he carried to the temple there. In the Thiruvasagam he later sang, he remembers again and again with gratitude how the Lord 'took me as His own under the kurundha tree'.

When Arulnandiyar sings in Irupa Irupathu, 'He came in a form like mine and lifted me', it is the same experience. The Lord does not call down from the sky; He comes near us in a form like ours, gives us His hand and lifts us up.

To reflect on

Do we see that if we cling to 'I did it' even in our good deeds, that too becomes a chain?
