Meaning

My bond is cut; I have reached Your feet, O Lord, the sweet essence who dwells at Thiruvarutthurai! O Meykanda Deva, who showed me non-separation so that I, who thought myself apart, might find my own self! What is this twofold karma? If it is the good and bad of mind, body and speech, those pass away in an instant and do not last even a millet grain's time. Maya, the cause, is insentient, and so is its effect. Then by what way does it come to me as suffering? Though the deed is mine, its fruit does not come of itself. If Yama gives it, there is no end to it; if deeds bring their own fruit, Yama, free of delusion, has no case to try. For one soul, one giver is enough, two are not needed; and You, the Lord, are there. Your compassion is beyond the measure of words. If we must simply undergo what is decreed, there is no reaching You for us. By the saying 'What is does not go, what is not does not come, only what is, is', if You give in the measure each can receive, all Your generosity is in that; no law binds You to give. Yet is it good for this dog of a servant that You plunge me into cruel suffering? O Lord Shiva, who makes clear both deluding karma and the bond of karma!

Explanation

This agaval asks who feeds the soul the fruit of its karma. The second sutra of the Sivagnana Bodham answers: karma is insentient and bears no fruit by itself; it is the Lord who gives each soul the fruit fit for its karma. Even when He seems harsh, it is grace. The Sivagnana Siddhiyar compares Him to a physician: as a physician cuts and cauterises for the patient's good, the suffering the Lord gives is the medicine that ripens the malam. Thiruvarutthurai is the name of the Shiva temple at Thiruvennainallur; it was here that Sundarar sang his first hymn, 'Pittha piraisoodi'.
