Meaning
O nectar of the milky ocean! Sweet sugarcane of Vennainallur! My eye! When the soul withdraws and rests in the root (the muladhara) of the body, no bodily instrument is there. What makes it aware then? Tell me surely how seeing came to me.

Explanation
In Shaiva Siddhanta it is said that in deep sleep and the turiya states the soul withdraws downward from the point between the brows to the heart, the throat, the navel and the muladhara (the 'descending states'). Then the senses and the mind do not work. Even then the soul does not perish: the Lord stays with it, inseparable, and guards it. He is the soul's witness. The cries 'O sugarcane', 'O nectar' show Arulnandiyar's tenderness: even his philosophical questions come with devotion.
To reflect on
Do we ask even our deepest questions with love? Do knowledge and devotion walk together in us?
