Meaning
O true God of beautiful Vennainallur! When I stand in the first of the five states You spoke of, the other four have gone and I do not experience them. Here there is nothing that goes down, learns them, and climbs back up to tell of them. Then by what was it made clear that they exist? Explain it to me.

Explanation
Shaiva Siddhanta speaks of five states: waking (jagrat), dream (svapna), deep sleep (sushupti), turiya and the state beyond it (turiyatita). In the waking state, dream and deep sleep are not remembered; so who knew them? That is the disciple's question. The fourth sutra of the Sivagnana Bodham answers it: the soul, joined with its inner faculties, moves through these states in turn. It is the Lord who knows every state as witness and makes the soul aware. The next agaval opens this doubt further.
To reflect on
Who keeps watch over us while we sleep? Do we remember the One who is with us even when we are not aware?
