O Meykanda Deva! Both knowledge and ignorance are found together in me, Your servant. Shall I call myself knowing, or ignorant? Examine it and tell me, without contradiction.

Explanation

This is a question about the nature of the soul. Shaiva Siddhanta calls the soul 'sadasat': when it turns to Shiva, the Real (sat), it takes on His nature; when it turns to the bond (pasam), the unreal (asat), it takes on that colour, just as a crystal shows the colour of whatever is near it. The soul is by nature a knower, but the anava malam veils its knowledge, so ignorance is found with it. Siddhanta teachers compare this to the eye and darkness: the eye has the power to see, yet in darkness it sees nothing.

To reflect on

What does our understanding lean on? Do we notice that we take on the colour of what surrounds us?
