Meaning
Hiding His forehead eye and the dark stain on His throat, He came to this earth to remove the impurity (malam) of people: He is Meykandan of Thiruvennainallur. Those who have truly experienced the state of non-separation hold Him in their hearts as Meykandan, 'the one who saw the Truth'.

Explanation
This is the opening verse of the book. Arulnandi Sivachariyar praises his guru: Lord Shiva Himself hid His marks, the third eye and the blue throat, and came in human form as Meykanda Devar. 'The guru is Shiva' is a foundation of Shaiva Siddhanta. The eighth sutra of the Sivagnana Bodham teaches that when a soul is ripe, the Lord comes as its guru and awakens it. 'Veru inmai', non-separation, is the Siddhanta advaita: the soul is neither lost in Shiva nor apart from Him, but one with Him in union. The book is an andhadhi: this verse ends with 'kan' and the next begins with 'kan'.
To reflect on
Do we have the eyes to see God in the form of the guru? How deeply do we honour those who showed us the truth?
