Meaning

Taking the moon-browed Goddess as half of Yourself, You appeared at Vennainallur to give me the true goal. You entered within me, made my heart clear, and showed me a vision in Your measure. Yet if I speak of my own reality and greatness: from the scriptures I learned that I pervade everything, from the netherworld up to the Shakti tattva. And this same I entered through the gates of the senses, grew confused, passed through the five states of awareness, and went to and fro in birth and death. Am I everywhere, or only here, or do I travel to the place I go? Of these three, tell me which is true. The scriptures say what is not does not come to be, and what is, is; the soul neither shrinks nor grows. If you say it becomes large in an elephant and small in an ant, that is not knowledge but only the life of the body. Greatness in the great and smallness in the small truly belong to You alone, O Great One; they are not mine. You who are sweet to my mind, now tell me the rest.

Explanation

Whether the soul pervades everything or is the size of the body is a great debate among the Indian schools. Shaiva Siddhanta holds that the soul is by nature pervasive (vyapaka), but because the anava malam contracts its knowledge, it knows only as far as the body it has entered. It is like a lamp placed inside a pot: its light is seen only as far as the pot. So the soul's going and coming is the narrowing and widening of its knowledge; in substance it does not change. Only the Lord's pervasiveness is veiled by nothing. So the disciple comes to see that greatness and smallness belong to the Lord alone.

To reflect on

What 'pot' keeps our understanding small: the body, our position, our likes and dislikes?
