Meaning

O my Father! Though grace stands before me, how is it that darkness stays in my eye and does not give way to it? O You who wear the garland that bewitches the bees, King who dwells at Vennainallur, my Lord: change my delusion and grant me understanding.

Explanation

The question is how darkness can remain when grace fills everything. Siddhanta teachers give a fine image for this: though daylight spreads everywhere, to the owl it is only darkness. The fault is not in the light but in the owl's eye. In the same way grace is always present; it is not seen because the anava malam covers the soul's eye. When the malam ripens, the same grace is revealed.

To reflect on

At times when God's grace seems absent, do we stop to ask whether the fault may lie in our own sight?
