Meaning
O Rudra, Pasupati, true Lord of Vennainallur who rules the Pennai river, who has no form of His own yet took a form to make even lowly me His servant: by what did You make me know? If I say I knew while in a state of awareness, I am never apart from the state to know it. If the instruments, time and the rest, make me know, they are insentient things that do not know one another, and the working of what does not know is itself unknowing. If they knew, they would have to act on their own. Nor do I know a seer that stands apart from the crowd of instruments, for on my own I have no awareness. If I saw by You, You would become my instrument, which lessens Your greatness. If I say 'I am Brahman', no Lord is needed. Hear further, O King: before I reached You I had no awareness of my own. So how did my seeing myself, and my seeing together with You, come about? O my eye, Lord of the worlds, great ocean of grace!

Explanation
This agaval asks who knows, and by what. Shaiva Siddhanta rejects three wrong answers. The instruments do not know, for they are insentient. The soul does not know alone, for anavam has veiled it. Nor is the soul Brahman, for then it could never have been bound by the malam. The right answer is that the soul has the nature of a knower; the Lord, standing as the soul of the soul, moves its knowing; and the instruments of maya help like a lamp. The eye sees, but not without the light of the sun. The Lord is not an instrument but the light. Verses 28 to 30 of Unmai Vilakkam use the same image.
To reflect on
Each time we say 'I understood', do we remember with gratitude the light that shines within us?
