Meaning

O Meykanda Deva, risen on this earth, who removes the cloak of darkness so that the eight directions shine, makes the lotus bloom and grants the ancient wisdom! Faultless nectar! Great mountain of virtues! How is it that I join You and then fall away? If Your nature is 'We join when you think of Us, and depart when you do not', You would be one who moves at command. If in Your state, which stands high everywhere and is never apart, I come, join and go back, then You are like the shade of a tree, whose nature is neither to welcome nor to refuse the road-weary travellers who come down one by one to rest in it. If, in this state, You pity me, poor one, and both show and hide Yourself, that would go against grace, O Great One. Besides, there is no word in this ancient world that even those who reached You are born again. So tell me how there can be joining and slipping away, so that my confusion ends. Speak the word that no word can answer, O You who are beyond words!

Explanation

The question is whether the Lord's grace takes sides. A tree's shade neither calls anyone nor turns anyone away; those who come enjoy it. If the Lord is like that, what does His grace mean? Shaiva Siddhanta says the Lord's grace is even, like the sun: the lotus opens and the night lily closes not because the sun treats them differently. Grace is revealed according to the soul's ripeness. It is also a firm teaching of Siddhanta that a soul that has fully reached liberation is not born again. The rise and fall felt along the way come because the malam has not yet wholly gone.

To reflect on

When our spiritual life slackens, do we blame God, or look at our own ripeness?
