Meaning

I speak without reflecting, with a troubled heart; it is the duty of the great to give grace unchanging. If to be mingled with You is my true state, Your justice is beyond word and mind. You set me in this great cave of a hut made of seven tissues and nine openings, shut me inside so that I cannot escape, and stir up desire and the other powers to move me: that skill of Yours is a great wonder. Let it be. Knowing speech, mind and the moving body, word, thought and deed, the good and the bad, in perfect order, with nothing lacking and nothing excessive, dividing time and place without confusion, You stand in the middle and give each its fruit, and so You are the impartial Judge. In the deeds of the wise there is no confusion; it is the deeds of the unworthy that become confusion. The countless karmas spread through the paths of the universe You purified (by initiation), and in the balance of karma they fell away. Then who now feeds me the karma that has begun to bear fruit? So there remains no duty of feeding karma; is not guarding dharma the true greatness? O pupil of my eye, thought within my thought, King of Vennai, Meykanda Deva! Tell me plainly what this grace of Yours is that keeps me in this hut of suffering and does not remove it.

Explanation

Through the guru's initiation the stored karma (sanchita) has been burned; then why does the body still go on? That is the question. Shaiva Siddhanta divides karma into three: sanchita, what is stored up; prarabdha, what has begun to bear fruit and has given this body; and agamiya, what is yet to come. Initiation destroys the sanchita; the one who knows is free of attachment to agamiya, so it does not cling; only prarabdha must be lived through, like an arrow already shot that flies on until it reaches its mark. For the jivanmukta that living through is no longer bondage; the Lord makes him receive even that as grace.

To reflect on

Can we carry our duties and our sorrows without attachment, receiving them as given by the Lord?
