Meaning

Like a river that feeds the world in flood and, when it dries, still seeps into the hollows of the rock, the rich — worn thin by giving to many — still give to a few and do what should be done.

Explanation

In this simile the river is shown in two states. In flood it feeds the whole world. When it dries it has not died — it still seeps in the crannies of the rock. The small seepage is the river's nature; the flood was an occasion, the seep is the nature.

The rich have the same two states. While wealth was abundant he gave to many. When it wore thin he did not stop; he gives to a few. The verse therefore decides the question at the point where it is hidden from view: the small giving that survives ruin is what makes a man a giver at all.

To reflect on

The giving that survives loss is the real measure of a giver.
