மயக்கம் இல்லாமல், மறுமைக்கு வித்தாக அறம் செய்து, சிறுமைப்படாதே வாழுங்கள். அறிஞராக நிலைத்து நிற்கும் இடத்திலும், காரணமே இல்லாமல் நிறம் மாறிப்போகும் வாய்ப்புகள் பல உள்ளன.
Meaning
Sow without delusion the seed that serves the world to come, and live without meanness. Even standing among the discerning, there are many ways one's colour can change with no cause visible.

விளக்கம்
பாடல் ஒரு பணியை முன்வைக்கிறது: மயக்கம் இல்லாமல் அறம் செய். 'மயல் இன்றி' என்பது அறச்செயலின் தரத்தை நிர்ணயிக்கிறது. மயக்கத்தோடு செய்யப்படும் அறம் தற்செயலானது; மயக்கம் நீங்கிய பின் செய்யப்படும் அறமே விதை. விதை என்பது இப்போது தெரியாத ஒரு பயிருக்காக இப்போது விதைப்பது.
இரண்டாம் அரை எச்சரிக்கை. நல்லாரோடு இருப்பது மட்டும் பாதுகாப்பு அன்று. அறிஞர் நடுவே நின்றுகொண்டிருந்தாலும், வெளிப்படையான காரணம் ஏதும் இல்லாமலே மனிதனின் நிறம் மாறும் — ஒருவன் இன்று நல்லவனாக இருப்பது நாளையும் அதற்கு உத்தரவாதம் அன்று. எனவே வாழ்க்கையை நல்லாரின் துணையில் நிலைத்துவிட்டது என்று கருதாதே, சிறுமைப்படாதே வாழ் என்பது முடிவு.
Explanation
The verse sets a task: do virtue without delusion. 'Without delusion' fixes the quality of the act. Virtue done in confusion is accidental; virtue done once the confusion has cleared is seed — and seed is what is sown now for a crop not yet seen.
The second half is a warning. Standing among good people is not itself safety. Even among the discerning a man's colour can turn with no visible cause: that one is good today is no pledge that he is good tomorrow. So do not treat the company of the good as a settled thing; live without meanness is the conclusion.
