Karranavum kannakanra saayalum irpirappum / Pakkaththaar paaraattap paateythum thaanuraippin / Maiththunar palki marunthin thaniyaatha / Piththanen rellap patum.

Meaning

Learning, a generous and open bearing, good family — these earn praise only when others speak of them; let a man recite them himself and he is mocked as a madman whom no medicine can calm.

Explanation

The comparison is fine: one substance, two different mouths. In another's mouth it is praise; in his own it is madness. The thing has not changed; the speaker has.

The phrase about kinsmen multiplying is mockery — relatives crowd round, not in respect but for the sport. What the verse says is that good qualities speak themselves, and a man who speaks them turns them into comedy. Restraint is the proper language of such qualities. Here, saying nothing is a skill.

To reflect on

Good qualities speak for themselves; spoken by you, they become comedy.
