Meaning
They gain nothing good from day to day, do no virtuous deed, give nothing to those who have nothing, never come to the shoulder of anyone dear, and never live with a good name — do they not loathe the very days they live?

பாடலின் ஐந்து மறுப்புகள் ஒரு முழு வாழ்வை அளந்து விடுகின்றன: பொருள், அறம், கொடை, அன்பு, புகழ். ஐந்தும் இல்லை. பின் ஒரு கேள்வி: இப்படி வாழ்பவர் அந்த நாட்களையே வெறுக்கமாட்டாரோ?
இந்தக் கேள்வி கடுமையானது; ஆனால் நியாயமானது. ஏனெனில் இங்கே வாழ்க்கை என்பது நாட்களைக் கழிப்பது அன்று. ஐந்து வழிகளிலும் வெறுமையாக இருந்தால், நாட்கள் சுமையாகின்றன. பாடல் யாரையும் தண்டிக்கவில்லை; ஒரு கண்ணாடியைக் காட்டுகிறது. அதைப் பார்த்து மாறுபவருக்கு இந்தக் கேள்வி ஒரு விடுதலை.
Explanation
Five denials measure a whole life: substance, virtue, giving, affection, good name. All five are missing. Then one question: would a man living so not loathe those very days?
The question is hard, and it is fair. For living here is not the passing of days. Empty on all five counts, the days become a weight. The verse does not punish anyone; it holds up a mirror. For the man who looks and changes, the question is a release.
