Even when they attain high place, the noble do not miss a step and keep one and the same walk; but the base man, once high place is his, loses that one steadiness.

Explanation
The verse plays on the word for walk, which also means conduct, set against the word for high place. The noble rise, and their walk does not change.
The base man is the opposite: when the high place comes, the walk is lost. What the verse says is that position is not a measure of a man's worth but a test that reveals it. Whoever changes when wealth arrives was base already; it was hidden and is now seen. High place does not change a person; it brings him out.
To reflect on
If the walk changes when the rank rises, the fault is the man's, not the rank's.
