Meaning

Though the mansion be one where rain plays, though its walls be fair and its jewelled lamp burn bright, what does it avail? The house of a man who has no wife of worthy excellence is a forest, hard to look upon.

Explanation

The verse piles up the parts of a house: a mansion where rain plays, fair walls, a jewelled lamp. Everything is there. Then comes the question, 'what of it?' That question carries the whole weight of the poem.

The answer comes in the last line: that house is a forest. Not size but relationship makes a house a home. When a building is full and still cannot be lived in, the same place turns into something forbidding, a place one halts outside of. 'Hard to look at' is not about ugliness; it is about a loneliness that gives no courage to walk in.

The Bhagavata Purana, Book 7

Prahlada and the Pillar

From the Bhagavata Purana. The asura king Hiranyakashipu hated Vishnu, yet his little son Prahlada would speak of nothing else. The father had the boy thrown from cliffs, trampled by elephants, bitten by snakes and cast into fire, and each time Prahlada came through untouched, still smiling.

At last the king struck a pillar of the hall and shouted, "Is your Hari in this pillar too?" "He is everywhere," said Prahlada. The pillar split open and Narasimha, half man and half lion, came out at dusk, on the threshold, and destroyed the tyrant. The many paths of dharma meet in one thing: a mind that does not waver.

To reflect on

It is not the building that makes a house a home, but the relationship living in it.
