Meaning

He hears 'beware, this is perilous' and takes no care; he hears the crash and the uproar and still does not learn. To feel safe, thinking 'in this house it will go sweetly', is itself the fault of stoning — the harm a man brings down on himself.

Explanation

Two lines strike the same string twice: he hears and takes no care; he hears and does not learn. The warning has arrived, the lesson has arrived, and the mind has not taken it in. That is not ignorance; it is a refusal to know.

The third line shows what the mind says to itself: 'in this house it will go sweetly.' That confidence is the danger. The last line calls it stoning, which is to say the blow does not come from outside: the man injures himself. Experience becomes a lesson only when the mind changes.

To reflect on

Experience becomes a lesson not by hearing it, but by the mind changing.
