Meaning

You gave, and I scooped up the nectar of your grace and gulped it down; because of my karma, because of my lack of good fortune, I choked. Give me cool water to drink, like rare honey that gurgles as it flows, and save me. I am in distress. You who own me, I, your servant, take refuge in you alone.

Explanation

This is one of the most human images in the Thiruvasagam. Like a hungry man who gulps his food in a rush and chokes, Manikkavasagar gulped down grace and choked. What he received at Perunthurai was greater than he could bear.

One who chokes needs water, and the 'water' he asks for is more grace. Only grace can settle the turmoil grace has caused, as a mother pats the back of a baby choking on milk and gives it water.

Adaikkalappathu ends here. In all ten verses the devotee lists every failing he has and gives one answer at the end: 'I, your servant, take refuge in you.' Surrender is the sign of ripeness.

The Blue-Throated Lord Who Drank the Poison for Those Who Sought Refuge

The gods and the asuras churned the ocean of milk to win the nectar of immortality, with Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. As they churned, before the nectar appeared, the deadly Halahala poison rose up. Its heat began to scorch the worlds, and gods and asuras alike fled in terror.

They ran to Kailasa and took refuge in Siva: 'Save us!' The Lord gathered the poison in his hand and drank it. Uma, fearing that if it went down it would destroy the worlds within him, held his throat, and the poison stayed there and turned it blue. From that day he has been Nilakantha, the Blue-Throated Lord.

In Adaikkalappathu, Manikkavasagar speaks of his mind being churned 'like curd in a pot', and in every verse he cries, 'I take refuge in you.' The Lord who drank the poison churned up from the ocean to save those who sought his refuge will not abandon a devotee churned by worldly desire who seeks refuge in him. To protect those who come to him for refuge, he will drink even poison.

To reflect on

What good thing in your life could you savour slowly instead of gulping it down?
