பொன்பார் புனல்வெண்மை பொங்கும் அனல்சிவப்புவன்கால் கருமைவளர் வான்தூமம் – என்பார்எழுத்து லவரய அப்பாராதிக்கு என்றும்அழுத்தமதாய் நிற்கும் அது.

பொருள்
நிலம் பொன் நிறம், நீர் வெண்மை, பொங்கும் நெருப்பு சிவப்பு, வலிய காற்று கருமை, வளரும் ஆகாயம் புகை நிறம் என்பர். நிலம் முதலியவற்றுக்கு முறையே ல, வ, ர, ய, அ என்ற எழுத்துகள் என்றும் உறுதியாக நிற்கும்.
Meaning
Earth is golden, water white, blazing fire red, the strong wind black, and expanding space the colour of smoke, so they say. And the letters la, va, ra, ya and a stand firmly for earth and the others in that order.

ஒவ்வொரு பூதத்துக்கும் ஒரு நிறமும் ஒரு பீஜ எழுத்தும் உண்டு என்று ஆகமங்கள் சொல்கின்றன: நிலம் "லம்", நீர் "வம்", நெருப்பு "ரம்", காற்று "யம்", ஆகாயம் "ஹம்" (இங்கே "அ"). பூதசுத்தியில் இந்த நிறங்களையும் எழுத்துகளையும் தியானிக்கிறார்கள். பூசை செய்பவர் தம் உடலையே சிவபூசைக்குரிய கோயிலாக்குவதே இதன் நோக்கம்.
Explanation
The Agamas say each element has a colour and a seed syllable: earth 'lam', water 'vam', fire 'ram', air 'yam' and space 'ham' (given here as 'a'). In bhuta shuddhi these colours and letters are meditated on. The purpose is that the worshipper makes his own body a temple fit for the worship of Shiva.
