Meaning

We have told you the great elements as they are. Now, to speak of the five sense objects, so full of deceit: they are sound, touch, form, taste and smell, the five that stir up desire. Understand them slowly.

Explanation

The five tanmatras, the subtle elements, are sound, touch, form, taste and smell; they are the subtle form of the five great elements. The author calls them 'full of deceit' because they beguile and draw the soul. The Thirukkural says the same: 'The world is in the hands of the one who knows the nature of the five: taste, sight, touch, sound and smell.'
