Explanation
Five strokes draw a whole figure: speech, look, delight, anger, behaviour. All five run in one direction.
Note that the first two concern speech and the eye — baseness is not visible only in deeds; it shows in a word and a glance. The third is the cruellest: joy at another's distress. The fourth is quick anger, and the fifth is going from place to place mocking. He lowers others to cover his own lack. The verse does not punish; it identifies.
To reflect on
Joy at another's distress is the clearest mark of a base nature.
