Meaning

Those of ripe understanding guard themselves and stay restrained even when young in years; the shallow, grown old, still burn in bad conduct and drift about like a woman of the streets, never knowing what they are.

Explanation

The comparison is about age. Those of ripe understanding stay restrained even while young; those of little understanding do not restrain themselves even when old.

Restraint, then, does not come with years. The image of one wandering the streets is harsh, and it shows a condition that settles nowhere and keeps nothing. The last phrase says they do not know their own being. So understanding here is not information; it is knowing yourself. With it, even youth is calm; without it, even old age is not.

The Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda

The Ocean That Would Not Listen

From the Ramayana. Rama's army reached the shore, but the sea lay between them and Lanka. Rama spread kusha grass on the beach, lay down facing the ocean, and prayed to the Sea-god for three days and nights, asking politely for a way across.

The ocean gave no answer. Then Rama rose, took up his bow and fitted a blazing arrow, ready to dry up the waters. At once the Sea-god rose from the waves with folded hands and showed him how to build a bridge. The poet Tulsidas later summed it up: some will not yield to gentle asking, only to fear. That is the nature of the mean.

To reflect on

Restraint does not come with years; it comes from knowing yourself.
