Explanation

The final couplet of the chapter gives a subtle comparison. The more the gambler loses, the more he longs for the game. The hope "I can win it back next time" never lets him go. In the same way, the more the soul suffers, the less it lets go of its attachment to life. We imagine that suffering would make life hateful, but the soul holds on all the more. Through this likeness Valluvar shows both the stubborn nature of gambling and the soul's hunger for life.

Here gambling is not merely a habit but an attachment, and to give up an attachment is very hard even when it does harm. In Hindu thought attachment is the root of the cycle of birth. The Bhagavad Gita says, "act, giving up attachment". Where loss should teach and turn a man away, the gambler grips the game still harder because of the loss. This is the dangerous nature of gambling. Some other evils fade with loss; gambling grows with it.

Some commentators see in the comparison that the soul's love of life may be negative or positive. Because it clings to life, the soul bears suffering; the same clinging becomes a snare at the dice. Wisdom, therefore, lies in recognising desire and keeping it in check.

A story

Desire in the Bhagavata

In the ninth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana comes the story of King Yayati. Yayati, son of Nahusha, was a great king of the lunar line. He married Devayani, daughter of Shukracharya, and Sharmishtha, daughter of the Asura king. When Shukracharya learned of his relation with Sharmishtha, he was enraged and cursed him: "Let youth go and old age come." Later, at Yayati's pleading, he softened the curse so that if someone else took on his old age, Yayati could have his youth back.

Yayati called his elder sons and asked for their youth. All refused. Only the youngest, Puru, gladly accepted. Yayati enjoyed pleasure for a thousand years. Yet his desire was not satisfied. Every pleasure only stirred more desire. As fire does not die when ghee is poured on it but burns more, he came to realise, desire is not quenched by indulgence.

Then he saw a great truth. The words he spoke from his experience are in the Bhagavata: "Ghee poured on fire does not extinguish it; likewise desire does not subside by enjoying the objects of desire." He returned Puru's youth to him and crowned him. He himself went to the forest and did penance.

This story shows the depth of Valluvar's couplet. As the gambler wants more with each loss, desire grows with each indulgence. Yayati gained the wisdom to see this and turn away. The chapter ends by saying that the wise are those who gain that wisdom before they are caught in the snare of gambling.
