Purananuru, the songs of AvvaiyarAvvaiyar at Adhiyaman's Gate
From the Purananuru. The Sangam poet Avvaiyar went to the generous chieftain Adhiyaman Neduman Anji to receive a gift. Adhiyaman, wanting her to stay longer with him, kept delaying.
Tired of waiting, Avvaiyar sang to the gatekeeper: 'O keeper of the gate! For a poet who knows her own worth, the whole world is open. Whichever direction she goes, there will be rice for her.' It was the self-respect of one who would not stand begging where giving was not done with honour.
The Purananuru also celebrates what followed: out of love for her, Adhiyaman gave Avvaiyar the rare amla fruit that granted long life, which he had won for himself. The story shows both the dignity of the seeker and the beauty of giving without hiding, the two things this verse brings together.
