Pozhinthinithu naarinum poomisaithal sellaathu / Izhinthavai kaamurooum eeppoal - izhinthavai / Thaangkalantha nenjinaark kennaakum thakkaarvaayth / Thaenkalantha thaerrassol thaervu.

Meaning

Though it pours out a sweet scent, the fly will not go to the flower; it lusts after what is base. So what will become of those whose minds are mingled with base things when the honeyed, clear words of the worthy are set before them to choose?

Explanation

The image comes from a small creature. The flower gives out its fragrance; the bee seeks it out. The fly does not go there; it circles the refuse. The fault is not in the flower but in the fly's nature.

Now to people. In the mouths of the worthy there are clear words mingled with honey; but the capacity to choose them does not belong to a mind steeped in base things. So good counsel arrives and does nothing, because there is no place in that mind for it to be taken. The lack is not in the teaching but in the mind the teaching falls on.

To reflect on

Good counsel is useless where there is no mind to receive it.
