Meaning
In this world ringed by the sea, is there any merit other than this — that those who understand should live? Yet those without understanding live too, like the vattai and the vazhuthunai, dressed in silk and fine cloth.

பாடலின் முதல் கூற்று வியப்போடு வருகிறது. உலகில் புண்ணியம் என்பது வேறு ஏதோ அன்று; உணர்வுடையார் வாழ்வதே அதன் அடையாளம். அறிவு இருப்பது மட்டுமே ஒரு சமூகத்தின் மேன்மை.
இரண்டாம் கூற்றில் கடுமையான கேள்வி. அறிவு இல்லாதவரும் வாழ்கிறார்; பட்டும் துகிலும் உடுத்து நடக்கிறார். அவர் வட்டும் வழுதுணையும் போல — மரங்களில் ஒட்டிக் கொண்டு வளரும், பயனற்ற தாவரங்கள். அதாவது வாழ்வது என்பதும் உடுப்பது என்பதும் தகுதியின் அறிகுறி அன்று. உடை வெளிப்புறம்; உணர்வே உள்ளார்ந்த பெருமை.
Explanation
The verse's first statement comes as a wonder. Merit in this world is nothing else: that those who understand are alive is its mark. The presence of understanding is itself the excellence of a society.
In the second half a harder question. Those without understanding live as well; they walk about dressed in silk and fine cloth. But they are like the vattai and the vazhuthunai — plants that cling and grow and are of no use. So to live, and to be dressed, is no sign of worth. Dress is on the outside; understanding is the honour within.
