Explanation

The verse's question is direct. Those who love the good are alive and well; at the same time the graceless prosper. How is that? The verse looks for its own answer, and only one comes: the fruit of old deeds.

So wealth and flourishing are not evidence of a man's worth. They may have arrived as the yield of deeds long past. The answer sounds like a comfort, but there is severity in it too: when the old fruit is spent, new fruit must come from new deeds. What is done today decides the standing of tomorrow.

To reflect on

Prosperity is no proof of worth; today's deeds decide tomorrow's standing.
