நாப்படியே பாடம் சொல்லி, நயம் உணர்வார் போல் அடங்கி நிற்கும் அறிவற்றவர் நட்பைச் செறிவுடையார் சேரார்; அவன் அவையில் குன்றும்போது அது அவன் குடும்பத்துக்கே பழி.
Meaning
The discerning will not join the company of those who recite their texts and put on the look of men who have felt their meaning; when such a man falls short in the assembly, it brings blame on his family.

பாடலின் இலக்கு இரு பக்கமும் பரவுகிறது. ஒன்று: மேடையில் நிற்பவர். பாடம் நன்றாகச் சொல்வார்; உணர்ந்தவர் போல் அமைந்திருப்பார். ஆனால் உள்ளே அந்த நயம் இல்லை. இரண்டு: அவரைச் சேர்த்துக்கொள்பவர். செறிவுடையார் அந்த நட்பைத் தேடார்.
இங்கே குறை அவருக்கு மட்டும் அன்று; குடும்பத்துக்கும் பழி வருகிறது. ஏனெனில் அவையில் நிற்பது ஒருவர் தனக்காக அன்று; அவர் வந்த இடத்துக்காகவும். சொல் கற்றுக்கொள்ளலாம்; உணர்வு கற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாது. அதை மறந்து நிற்பவன், தன் பெயரோடு தன் வீட்டுப் பெயரையும் அந்த அவையில் இழக்கிறான்.
Explanation
The verse aims at two sides. First, the man on his feet: he recites his text well and wears the look of one who feels its sweetness, but the sweetness is not inside him. Second, those who take him into their company: the discerning do not seek that friendship.
The failure is not his alone; it brings blame on his family. For a man stands in an assembly not only for himself but for the house he came from. Words can be learned; feeling cannot. Forgetting that, he loses his family's name along with his own in that hall.
