Meaning

Before those whose understanding is ripe, one should hold back the flood of learned words; for in the presence of mature knowledge, word-knowledge fails.

Explanation

The scene is an assembly. A man pours out the words he has learned. But before those whose understanding has ripened, those words do not hold.

What the verse separates is knowledge held in the hand — got by reading — from seasoned understanding, got by living. When learned words fail before ripened understanding, that is not a disgrace; it is information. To know where you stand in a gathering is what it means to know an assembly.

The Ramayana, Kishkindha Kanda

Hanuman's First Words

From the Ramayana. When Rama and Lakshmana came to Rishyamuka hill, Sugriva was afraid they were Vali's spies, and he sent Hanuman to find out. Hanuman took the form of a young ascetic and greeted the two strangers in gentle, well-chosen words, asking who they were and why they had come.

When he finished, Rama turned to Lakshmana in wonder: "No one could speak like this who had not mastered the Vedas. In all his speech there is not one error. It is neither too long nor too short, neither hurried nor halting, and it pleases the heart." Hanuman read his listeners before he spoke, and his first words won a friendship that changed the world.

To reflect on

Knowledge in the hand and knowledge earned by living are not the same; knowing where you stand is knowing the assembly.
