Markandeya Purana and Vishnu PuranaWhen Vishwakarma Softened the Sun
From the Puranas. Sanjna, daughter of Vishwakarma, the architect of the gods, married Lord Surya. Their children were Vaivasvata Manu, Yama and Yamuna. But Sanjna could not bear her husband's fierce light and heat. She could not even look at him, and kept her eyes closed in his presence.
At last she made from her own shadow a woman just like herself, Chhaya, and left her in the home. Sanjna herself went away in the form of a mare to do tapas in the northern pastures. In time Surya learned the truth and set out to find her.
Before he went, Vishwakarma set the Sun upon his grinding wheel and trimmed away some of his blazing light. After that Surya's form became beautiful and gentle to the eye, and Sanjna returned to him happily. The Vishnu Purana says that from the shining fragments Vishwakarma made the Sudarshana discus of Vishnu, the trident of Shiva, and the Vel, the spear of Murugan.
Out of love, the Sun softened his own fierceness. The line "keeping the fire far away, he gives us its essence" recalls exactly this mercy.
