Explanation

In the closing part the poet calls the Sun directly by his pure Tamil name, "Gnayire", "O Sun". The Silappathikaram began with "gnayiru potrudhum", "we praise the Sun", and Kannadhasan's song too calls the Sun by that name and praises him. He calls the Sun "nalame", not just the giver of well-being but well-being itself. Our tradition holds that worship of the Sun brings health too; that is why it is said, "Aarogyam bhaskaraad icchet", "Seek health from the Sun."

The words "naayagan vadive", "O form of the Lord", hold the heart of the Sauram path. Other deities we see in the temple and in the mind, but the Sun we see with our own eyes every day. So he is called Pratyaksha Deivam, "the God who is seen". Followers of Sauram hold that the Supreme himself stands before us in visible form as the Sun, and Vaishnavas worship him as Surya Narayana.

"Naanilam", the fourfold land, is the world of Sangam Tamil: the hills (kurinji), the forests (mullai), the farmland (marudham) and the sea coast (neidhal). "Naanilam ula naal mattum", "for as long as this world exists", the poet promises, we will praise the Sun. The Sun never forgets to give his light for a single day, so our gratitude should never stop either. The song ends by doubling its praise, "potri, potri", as if that gratitude were overflowing.

Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda

The Aditya Hridayam Agastya Gave to Rama

From the Valmiki Ramayana. On the battlefield of Lanka, Rama and Ravana stood face to face. After the long fight Rama was weary, and he stood lost in anxious thought. The sage Agastya, who had come with the devas to watch the battle, then came down to Rama's side.

"Rama, my son, listen. I will tell you a secret hymn that brings victory over every enemy," he said, and taught him the Aditya Hridayam, the hymn to the Sun. "It brings every blessing, removes all sins, ends worry and sorrow, and lengthens life," he said. The hymn praises the Sun as the one through whom the world is created, sustained and dissolved, and in whom all the gods are contained.

Rama's mind grew clear. He touched water three times, faced the Sun and recited the hymn three times. New strength rose in his heart. Lord Surya in the sky was pleased and blessed him: "Make haste." Rama then defeated Ravana and brought well-being back to the world. The Aditya Hridayam is still recited every morning in homes today.
