Meaning

Shakti is the energy of the primal Supreme; to bow to it as Mother is growth. People of this land! See, there is no trickery in this; the other old, troubling creeds only bring sleep.

Shakti is the will of the ancient root-being; these three worlds are its play. On the great field of time, the whole crowd of the world is our Kali's dance.

The sight of the young morning sunlight is the splendour her eyes' light reveals. All the circles of fire shining at night in the blue sky are her rule.

The Lord whom the ancient Veda calls Narayana is Shakti's holy feet. Those who do tapas to reach them gain, here, wealth, knowledge and the awareness of Shiva.

To win the grace of our Mother, the Shakti of the primal Shiva, is liberation. To win it while life still remains - that is the way to happiness.

The Goddess of the ancient law, the white Bharati, Saraswati: whoever, blessed by her grace, does not learn the many books that explain the things we see, is a sinner.

The forms are three, the reality is one; that root-reality is a mountain of light. At every hour praise that beautifully shining light, calling it Shakti.

Explanation

This is a compact statement of Shakti philosophy. Shakti is the 'energy' of the Supreme, its active power, and worshipping that power as Mother is the Shakta way.

'The Lord the ancient Veda calls Narayana is Shakti's holy feet', 'the Shakti of the primal Shiva', 'Mother Bharati' - Vaishnava, Shaiva and Saraswati worship all meet in one Shakti. The last stanza says it plainly: 'The forms are three, the reality is one.' Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are forms of a single root-reality.

'While life still remains' matters: liberation is not something received after death but something to be reached while living, jivanmukti. Making learning part of the worship of Shakti, and calling the one who will not learn a 'sinner', is Bharathiyar's own voice.

To reflect on

'The forms are three, the reality is one' - how would seeing one reality behind many names change the way you worship?
