The king who once summoned Krishna, lord of the great discus, and had him serve as his envoy, said: ‘O foremost of Vedic sages, I am blessed that you have graciously come here. I have escaped, wholly, all the great sorrow of being born.’
Indian tradition holds that the mere arrival of a holy person removes the sorrow of birth; Yudhishthira is speaking of the greatness of satsang, the company of the good.
The epithet is striking: ‘the king who summoned the lord of the great discus and had him serve’. Krishna himself served Yudhishthira as envoy and Arjuna as charioteer. Even one so loved by the Lord must pass through suffering; that is the ground on which this story is told.

While Arjuna was away doing penance for divine weapons, the sage Brihadashva came to the grieving Yudhishthira, who asked him whether any king had ever suffered as he had.
The coming of a good person halves the sorrow of the heart.
