‘மலர்களில் சினை ஆமைகள் தங்கும் செல்வமிக்க நாட்டின் தலைவனே! காமம், சூதாடுதல், கள் உண்ணுதல், பொய் சொல்லுதல், ஈகையை மறுத்தல் ஆகிய இவை செம்மையை நினையாதவர்கள் மேற்கொள்ளும் நெறி என்று அறிவாயாக’ (என்றனர் அமைச்சர் முதலியோர்).
Meaning
‘Lord of the prosperous land where egg-laden tortoises rest among the flowers, know this: lust, gambling with dice, drinking liquor, telling lies and refusing to give are the ways of those who never think of what is right,’ said his ministers and elders.

அமைச்சர்களும் பெரியோர்களும் நளனை எச்சரிக்கின்றனர். அறநூல்கள் அரசர்களுக்குக் கூறும் ‘வியசனங்கள்’ (தீய பழக்கங்கள்) இவை. மனுஸ்மிருதி, அர்த்தசாஸ்திரம் ஆகியவை சூது, மது, காமம் ஆகியவற்றை அரசனை அழிக்கும் தீமைகளாகக் கூறுகின்றன.
திருக்குறளும் ‘சூது’, ‘கள்ளுண்ணாமை’ என்று தனி அதிகாரங்களில் இவற்றைக் கண்டிக்கிறது. (தலைப்பில் இருந்த ‘முதலினோர்’ என்ற பிழை ‘முதலியோர்’ என்று திருத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.)
Explanation
The ministers and elders warn Nalan. These are the vyasanas, the vices that the dharma texts warn kings against. The Manusmriti and the Arthashastra name dice, drink and lust among the vices that destroy a king.
The Thirukkural too condemns them in whole chapters of their own, on gambling and on abstaining from liquor. (The misprint mudhalinor in the heading has been corrected to mudhaliyor.)
