Explanation
The verse states the person's worth plainly: he is to be cherished as gold. Gold is not flung away for being heavy; it is guarded. 'Cherished' is the language of keeping something precious, not of putting up with it.
Then comes the fire. The very fire that has burned fine houses down is sought out every day and kindled inside one's own home, because the hearth will not burn without it. Nothing useful exists without its danger. So it is with the friend who has caused pain: he stays because he is needed, and because his place is already inside the house.
