Meaning

The lack of fine understanding is poverty; to have it is piled-up, heavy wealth. And when you think of it, would a eunuch who longs for womanhood and has lost his manhood deck himself in ornaments that were never meant for him?

Explanation

The first two words of the verse change the measure of everything. Wealth is not gold but fine understanding. A man without it is poor however much he owns; a man with it stands heavy with riches. The scale is not outside a man but within him.

Then a hard image. The eunuch longs for womanhood, but it is not his to have. Ornament will not make it so; in the eyes of others it is a thing that does not fit. In the same way the unlearned may put on the ornaments of learning, but the poverty inside does not change. Adornment does not confer understanding.

The Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva

Not Even a Needle's Point

From the Mahabharata. Before the great war, Krishna himself went to Hastinapura as the Pandavas' envoy. He asked only for five villages, one for each brother, so that the war could be avoided. Bhishma, Drona, Vidura and even Duryodhana's own mother Gandhari begged him to accept.

Duryodhana refused: "Without a war I will not give them even as much land as the point of a needle can pierce." He even tried to seize Krishna, who showed his cosmic form and left. That one refusal brought eighteen days of war and the death of every one of Duryodhana's brothers. Folly is refusing the good that is offered, even when everyone wise is pleading.

To reflect on

Wealth is not gold but fine understanding; that cannot be worn, only won.
