Karumamu mutpataap poakamum thuvvaath / Tharumamum thakkaarkkae seyyaa - orunilaiyae / Muttinri moonru mutiyamael ahthenpa / Pattinam perra kalam.

Meaning

If a man completes all three without fail in the one proper season — the work to be done, the enjoyment that comes to hand, and the giving of dharma to the worthy — that, they say, is it; it is like a ship that has made its port.

Explanation

The verse's three things are the three departments of a life: the work that must be done, the enjoyment that must be tasted, and the dharma that must be given to the worthy. All three are to be done in one season; put one off and do only another, and the account does not balance.

The closing image comes from the sea. A ship that has reached the harbour has finished its voyage, and its full worth is known only then. So the life of one who has completed all three without fail comes to its fullness. The hour missed here does not come round again; it is finished only when it is done in time.

To reflect on

A life is complete only when virtue, work and joy are all finished in their season.
