Meaning

They have been given this body, and yet they do not think of virtue; they spend their days for nothing. Alas, they see death before their eyes — the death that spares no one, not even those dear as their own life — and still they do not think of virtue.

Explanation

The verse opens in wonder: they have a body, and yet do not think of virtue. The body here is an opportunity — the instrument for doing good. The instrument is in hand and goes unused.

The word rendered 'for nothing' points at emptiness, and the sigh that follows shows the verse's pity. Death spares no one, not even those dear as life, and this is seen with one's own eyes — and still the mind does not turn. So the fault named is not ignorance but seeing and not thinking. That is foolishness at its height.

To reflect on

The body is the instrument of virtue; leaving it unused is the height of folly.
