Meaning

Even if a fly came and settled on my lord of the cool fields where the sluice brims with water, I would have grieved at it; but I have had only to sit and look at her who struck till fire flew and beat her breasts against him, and at his chest adorned with cool sandal.

Explanation

The power of the verse lies in a difference of scale. A fly is the smallest of touches, and even that would pain her — so tender is her care. Then the scene that follows breaks that scale open: someone striking till fire flies, breasts pressed against him, his chest anointed with cool sandal.

The single word that carries the story is in the last line — that she could only look on. There was nothing for her to do but watch. The sorrow of the poem is not in the act but in the helplessness. To stand near an injustice with no power to stop it is the hardest place of all.

To reflect on

Watching a wrong one cannot stop is the hardest seat in the house.
