Oataatha thaanai nalanen rulanoruvan / Peetaarunj selvap petaivantoa - tootaa / Murukutaiya maathar mulainanaikkun thanthaar / Arukutaiyaan venkutaiyaa naangku.
There is one named Nalan, whose army never turns; he wears a cool garland that wets the breasts of women full of grace, around which bees quarrel with their mates; and he bears the white umbrella.
This introduces Nalan: his name, his army, his beauty, his kingship.
The first words matter, the army that does not flee. Nalan's strength lies not only in his own arm but in his army: a king is not a hero alone, he is made brave by those he holds.
The white umbrella of rule appears in the closing line. It is precisely this umbrella he will later lose, and the story's central loss is shown here for the first time.
