Punkankoor yaamaththup poozhimaer raanpatuththuth / Thankan thuyilvaalaith thaankantum - enkan / Potiyaathaa lullaavi poakaathaal nenjsam / Vetiyaathaa lenraan vizhunthu.
In that night sharp with misery he too lay down on the dust, and even as he saw her sleeping before his eyes, he said: 'My eyes have not crumbled, my life-breath has not gone, my heart has not burst' — and he fell down.
The verse measures the depth of Nalan's inner grief. What he asks for sounds like death, but it is a complaint, not a wish: his eyes have not broken, his breath has not left, his heart has not burst — sorrow greater than death itself.
Subtly, she sleeps and he falls. Two states, one night, one bed.
Sorrow is at times greater than death.
