Meaning

If the divine ear of him who owns the world listens with grace to the sound of the makara lute, did he hear us this night? — so she wept, water streaming from her kayal-fish eyes, and the flower-garlanded girl sank down.

Explanation

The verse shows Damayanti's loneliness. A god lends an ear to music; did he not hear our weeping? It is a doubt thrown at justice itself.

Subtly, the small word asking whether he heard holds both longing — surely he would have listened — and complaint, that no help came.

To reflect on

One doubts whether a god who hears music hears weeping.
